Formula by Age Guide

Which formula stage does my baby need?
European organic formula is divided into stages based on your baby’s age and nutritional needs. Each stage is carefully formulated to match what your baby requires at that point in their development. Choosing the right stage ensures your baby gets the right balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals.
Stage PRE — From birth (0–6 months)

Stage PRE is designed for newborns from birth and is the closest formula to breast milk. It contains lactose as the only carbohydrate — no starch, no maltodextrin. This makes it the most easily digestible option for the youngest babies.
Stage PRE is suitable as a sole source of nutrition or alongside breastfeeding.
Available in: HiPP German, Holle cow and Holle goat
Stage 1 — From birth (0–6 months)

Stage 1 is also suitable from birth and is similar to Stage PRE, but may contain an additional carbohydrate such as starch or maltodextrin to make the formula slightly more filling. A good option for hungrier babies who find Stage PRE less satisfying.
Available in: HiPP Dutch, HiPP German, HiPP UK, Holle cow and goat, Kendamil cow and goat, Nannycare
Stage 2 — From 6 months (6–10/12 months)

Stage 2 is follow-on formula for babies who have started solid foods. It contains higher levels of iron to support the increased demand as babies become more active and begin weaning. Stage 2 is not a required step — if your baby is thriving on Stage 1 or PRE, there is no urgent need to switch at exactly 6 months.
Available in: HiPP Dutch, HiPP German, HiPP UK, Holle cow and goat, Kendamil cow and goat, Nannycare
Stage 3 — From 10/12 months (10/12+ months)

Stage 3 is growing-up milk for toddlers who are eating a varied diet of solid foods. It is designed to complement meals rather than replace them, providing additional vitamins, minerals and iron that toddlers may not get enough of from food alone.
Available in: HiPP Dutch, HiPP German, HiPP UK, Holle cow and goat, Kendamil cow and goat, Nannycare
Stage 4 — From 12/24 months (12/24+ months)

Stage 4 is available in select brands for older toddlers. It is an optional step designed to support toddlers who are fully on solid foods but whose parents want to continue providing a formula-based source of key nutrients alongside their diet.
Available in: HiPP Dutch, HiPP German, Holle cow and goat
When should I switch stages?
- Stage PRE → Stage 1: if your baby seems unsatisfied after feeds and is otherwise healthy, Stage 1 may be more filling
- Stage 1 → Stage 2: around 6 months, when solid foods are introduced — but only if you feel it is right for your baby
- Stage 2 → Stage 3: around 10–12 months, as your baby moves to a more varied diet
- Stage 3 → Stage 4: optional, based on your preference and your baby’s diet
There is no strict requirement to follow each stage in sequence. If your baby is thriving and your paediatrician is satisfied, it is fine to continue with the current stage. Always consult your paediatrician if you are unsure.
