How to store opened formula

Why storage matters
Once a tin or box of formula is opened, it is exposed to air and moisture — both of which can affect the quality and safety of the formula over time. Following the correct storage guidelines ensures your baby always receives formula that is nutritionally intact and free from contamination.
Storing opened powdered formula
- Seal the tin or box immediately after each use — always use the original lid or reseal the inner bag if applicable
- Store in a cool, dry place — a kitchen cupboard away from heat sources, steam and direct sunlight is ideal. Do not store in the fridge, as moisture can cause the powder to clump
- Use within 21 days of opening — this is the guideline for most European organic formulas including HiPP and Holle. Always check the packaging of your specific formula as this can vary
- Always use a clean, dry scoop — never use a wet or damp measuring spoon, as moisture introduced into the tin can cause bacteria to grow
- Do not transfer to a different container unless it is airtight and clearly labelled with the expiry date
Storing prepared formula (already mixed)
- Use within 2 hours if kept at room temperature
- Refrigerate immediately if not used straight away — store at below 5°C (41°F) and use within 24 hours
- Discard any formula left in the bottle after a feed — never save a partially used bottle for the next feed
- Reheat refrigerated formula by placing the sealed bottle in a bowl of warm water — never use a microwave
- Do not freeze prepared formula
Storing opened ready-to-feed formula
- Refrigerate immediately after opening
- Use within 24 hours of opening
- Discard any unused formula after 24 hours — do not use beyond this point even if the bottle appears full
