How to switch formula brands

Is it safe to switch formula brands?
In most cases, yes — switching formula brands is safe and straightforward. All baby formulas must meet strict nutritional standards, so your baby will continue to get the nutrients they need regardless of the brand. The main variables are taste, ingredient composition and how your baby’s digestive system responds to a new formula.
Switching is generally fine if your baby is healthy and growing well, and you are moving between similar formula types. If your baby has a diagnosed allergy, intolerance or reflux, always consult your paediatrician before switching.
When to switch gradually vs. straight away
Switching between similar formulas
If you are switching between two cow milk formulas — for example from one European organic brand to another — a gradual transition is not always necessary. Many babies adjust immediately without any digestive changes. You can finish your current tin and start the new brand straight away, or mix-feed across a few days to allow your baby to adjust to the new taste.
Switching from cow milk to goat milk formula
Goat milk has a different protein and fat structure to cow milk, and many babies find it easier to digest. However, because the composition is meaningfully different, a gradual introduction over a few days is recommended — start by replacing one feed per day with the new formula and increase from there while monitoring your baby’s response.
Switching to a sensitive or specialist formula
If your baby is showing signs of digestive discomfort — gas, constipation, skin rash or reflux — and you are switching to a comfort or hypoallergenic formula, a straight switch is often fine since the new formula is specifically designed to be gentler. Always consult your paediatrician if symptoms are persistent or severe.
What to expect when switching
It is normal for your baby to take a few days to adjust to a new formula. Common and temporary responses include:
- Changes in stool colour or consistency — this usually settles within a few days
- Mild gas or fussiness — normal as the digestive system adjusts
- Reluctance to take the new formula — some babies are sensitive to taste changes, especially older babies
If symptoms are persistent, worsen over time or include vomiting, skin reactions or significant feeding refusal, stop the new formula and consult your paediatrician.
Tips for a smooth switch
- Start with one feed per day — replace one bottle with the new formula and keep the rest the same, then gradually increase over three to five days
- Keep the bottle and routine the same — changing only the formula reduces the number of variables if your baby reacts
- Offer it when your baby is calm and hungry — not when they are overtired or very hungry
- Be patient with taste — older babies may need several introductions before accepting a new formula
- Monitor for a few days — watch stool, skin and behaviour before deciding whether the new formula suits your baby
