You’ve done the research and have decided to give your baby a European made organic formula. Your research may have also led you to a topic causing some controversy – irradiation. Imported perishable products like formula must go through customs, where they can be subjected to irradiation.
What is irradiation and how concerned should you be about it? Irradiation is the process of applying ionizing radiation to food. Irradiation is thought to improve the safety of foods, however, it’s also a process known to produce unsafe byproducts. Studies have shown these byproducts to increase cancer causing cells by damaging healthy cells. Irradiation can also eliminate essentials vitamins and minerals from our food.
Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves the use of irradiation on overseas, imported foods. Although the FDA regulates irradiation procedures and uses only approved sources of radiation, they are ultimately subjecting food to radiation when using the irradiation process to eliminate any potential contaminants.
Three sources of radiation are approved for the irradiating process: X-rays, Gamma rays, and Electron beams. Despite the FDA’s claims that irradiated food is safe, several studies have shown the adverse effects radiation has on our food supply.
How do you know if the imported formula you purchased has been irradiated? Simply put, you have to know where it’s coming from. At My Organic Formula, we go to great lengths to ensure the formula we carry is not radiated or tampered with.
How do we make sure the formula we sell is not irradiated? We work exclusively with two established and trustworthy shipping companies to get our products safely to the U.S. We also make sure our shipments are labeled correctly and contain the paperwork needed to get through customs without further inspection or worse, irradiation. Finally, our buyers make frequent trips to Europe to ensure the shipping companies we use are maintaining ethical practices.
Because we are passionate about getting you the safest formula in the quickest way possible, we operate two warehouses – one on the East Coast and one on the West Coast. No matter what coast your formula ships from, you know when you purchase from us, you’re getting a formula that has not been irradiated or tampered with.
